Americana

Where would we place fireworks
on our calendar
without the men at Jockey Hollow
whose frozen toes
tread New Jersey snows
without sufficient shoes
or clothes?

Where would we place an old colonial home
with its black shutters, front porch swing,
cicada song spinning from the oaks,
red geraniums in hanging pots,
blue hydrangea pillowing the earth at the bottom step,
and white shasta daisies at the sidewalk,
rising, tall and unpretentious,
in celebration to sky?

Where would we place the barbecue
with our Asian neighbor
who came last year with his parents, children,
and favorite uncle,
now grilling cheeseburgers and Vietnamese pork for us,
while little American flags poke up from tin pots
on their stoop,
marking the way home?
